Bones, bones, bones at Discovery Time!

Today during discovery time, we have been exploring a variety of animal and human bones. We drew different kinds of bones using white chalk and black paper. After that, we looked at the skeleton graph to find the name of the bone we traced. The names were really unusual!!!

We also drew a skeleton, Manaias drawing was excellent because it was detailed. We put the loose bones together in the right places. We were unsure about the arm bones, so we used the skeleton picture to help us.

We want to find out more, here are some of our questions...

Do our bones look like the skeleton bones. - Jessica

Are the bones from a real animal? - Angel

I was wondering how we did the organ puzzle - Hannah

I wonder what our bones are made of? - Kurt

Suzy Teaches us about Lungs.

This is Suzy Cato. Today, we watched her show called Suzy's World. She taught us some interesting things about how our lungs work. We took some notes as we watched the show.

We learnt that...
Air travels down our oesophagus into our lungs.

We have two lungs.

When we breathe in, our lungs expand - they get bigger.
When we breathe out, our lungs shrink - they get smaller.

Oxygen is in the air we breathe. If we don't have oxygen, we can't survive.

We went for a run around the junior team playground.
After we ran, we found that our breathing changed. Our breathing got faster, our tummy and chest moved up and down quiockly, and felt hot.

We love learning about our body!!!

Food and our Body.

Today at discovery time we made sandwiches. First, we put margarine on our bread. then we could choose what spread we wanted. We could have vegemite, jam and peanut butter. We used a knife to spread it on. Then we cut it in half and took a big bite.

We put on our Black Hat and thought about what we found difficult...
We found it difficult to spread the ingredience on, we had to hold the knife correctly.
Alex's sandwich tasted too salty because he put on too much vegemite. We learnt that you only need a little bit on our knife.
During Discovery Time, we also traced around our buddies body. Inside the outline, we drew the brain, lungs, heart, bladder, stomach, small and large intestine, and liver.

We put on our yellow hat and thought about the things we enjoyed the most...
'I enjoyed tracing around Sinead.' Jessica
'I enjoyed eating my vegemite sandwich.' Kyla
'I enjoyed making my plate of food.' Jayden
'I enjoyed Alex and Kaleb tracing around me.' Levi

We are having so much fun learning about how our body digests food!!!

Healthy Food Song

Check out this cool healthy food song. It's sung by the cookie monster.

Values Award

Manaia got the Values Award in fridays sharing assembly. He got this award for showing EXCELLENCE in his attitude towards learning.

Manaia shared what he did with Leeroy, the values toy.
Manaia, we are proud of you! What a great role model!

Food Pyramid

Today we put food into six groups. Our everyday food groups are diary, fruit, vegetables, meat/fish/nuts, and breads/grains. The last food group is high in fat and sugar; this group of food we only eat for treats.

We looked for pictures of food in magazines.

We cut the pictures out and decided which group it belongs in on the food pyramid.

What did we learn?
We need to eat six servings of bread and grains everyday.
We need to eat five servings of fruit and vegetables everyday.

We also learnt that it is important to eat a VARIETY of foods from each group to stay healthy.
